That doesn't explain why SYS and SYSTEM were fast (instant !).
Or were you using different Unix accounts (eg "oracle" for "sys" and "system"
but another account , even if or not in the "dba" group, for other
database accounts) ?

This was weird, the connect times were long for non-privileged (i.e. except sys/system) but for sys and system it was instant. Eventually we found the problem, it was a bad gigabit interconnect was really bad.
