RE: RMAN catalog

You've already got another copy of your RMAN repository in your control file in 
addition to the one in the RMAN catalog, so I'm not sure why you'd want to go 
to such an extent to have a 3rd copy of your RMAN repositories.

Why not just backup your RMAN catalog database just like the rest of your 
databases, but using only its own controlfile as the repository?

How about having DG for the catalog database?
