Though you didn't answer the question on how dbA was refreshed, I
guess that answers it - a complete db replacement causing new incarnation.

I've had that thought a few times.

Robust and powerful tools require complexity at some point,
and RMAN has all three.

When it comes to restoring old backups, restoring single files,
doing block level restores while the database is up, incremental
backups, and lots of other niceties, I wouldn't go back to
hot backups.
