So it might be misleading to a naïve user if the command description said it
backed up archives, but of course then it wouldn?t in noarchivelog mode.
Interesting point, Robert.

Also of course, if you want RMAN to be able to maximally automatic for
recoveries then you need to backup the archives via RMAN so it knows where
they are already and you don?t have to tell it. But there is utility in
backing up the archive logs at the OS level. If you?ve got a complete backup
in RMAN but the wheels fall off, but you also have tape sets (or DVDs or
even JBOD) with all the archives outside of RMAN, then you can still save
your database from older pieces or a lagged standby or even all the way from
nothing if you?ve got everything logged from creation. It?s also useful for
using busnet or upsnet to ?test recovery? at an old fashioned physical DR
site. And I really don?t want to ever just have one backup copy of anything
I really care about.

I've always thought that the archivelog backup should be the default
condition with a switch to turn it off. Maybe it's a programitic constraint
since the same command (backup database) is used for both ARCHIVELOG and
NOARCHIVELOG mode backups.

Yes, I like my backups to be recoverable :-) I was just pointing out the
caveat that they?re not included if you just run ?backup database?. It
seems to me that it would be a good idea to make the backup command include
archivelogs by default and only have an option to exclude them if desired
for some reason ? maybe in 12x.

True, don't you include the archive logs in the backup set??
