Norman, if you use the "view" several times in the query, CBO can decide to materialize it, without the hint.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm sure it is only materiali[sz]ed if you use the materialize hint ? Jonathan has a post somewhere on this list on this very subject (I think !).
