You can google about paravirtualization vs virtualization.

Oracle uses paravirtualized virtual machines based on Xen, when you
paravirtualized the environment an special kenel is needed but in some cases
you can get better performance. In a fully virtualized environment the
virtual machine emulates all physical devices and no software tweaking is
needed.

There are other concepts that applies to paravirtualized environments like
Doms that are interesting to read. I really don't know about VMware
Hypervisor, I have to update myselft about it.
