One company I know of that specializes in license negotiations is Miro
Consulting. I have used them once, they know their stuff and it paid off.

You need to play hardball with your rep: I believe the structure in sales is
that new licenses are handled by your account rep, but renewals are handled by
an in-house renewal rep, so you need to make sure (assuming this structure is
still in place) that you are talking with the renewal rep.

Sometimes buying new licenses does make sense if you are doing a radical
downsize of your licenses or have acquired other companies and are
consolidating, but this generally is for deals in the hundreds of thousands or
millions of dollars.

There used to be a company that specialized in negotiating / auditing your
licenses to try to save you money- the name escapes me. Obviously you need to
hire them on your behalf so it sort of depends on the size of your support bill.

Subject: Oracle Support renewal

Hi,

This is an Oracle support renewal question.

We wanted to drop support for a couple of products, but were told that if we
did that, the other items purchased in the same order would get bumped to list
price and we would have to pay 22% of that for support. Has anyone heard of
this?

Is there any way to get discounts on Oracle support renewals? Is there any
option to prepay a few years in advance in exchange for a discount?

We reached out to some of our contacts from Oracle but they are pretty firm
that there are no options unless we want to try and buy newer licenses at a
steeper discount (but that would mean throwing our existing licenses away).

I know this is a somewhat taboo subject, but was hoping to get some pointers as
our renewal is coming up.

Thanks!

Tom
