I don't understand what you say when you write "if you want Oracle's
backing you will need an enterprise edition - you must mean RedHat
Enterprise Edition - not Oracle - correct?

We are currently looking into moving from Solaris to Linux, but
be careful. Yes the Linux software is generally "free" but the supported
vendors will need at least $500(US) up to $2500 per server for 24x7
support, dependendent upon hardware (no of CPU's etc) and if you want
Oracle's backing you will need an enterprise edition, RedHat want about
$2000 a copy of RedHat AS v3.0 in the UK. If your shop is used to paying
through the nose for support to vendors like Sun, then these figures
don't seem so bad. The real savings come from the use of commodity Intel
hardware!
Just my tuppence worth, that we have discovered in our
investigations so far. Happy to be shot-down and corrected!
