Always, always, ALWAYS have at least one of your control files stored on a "local" drive and on another controller. So when the RAID controller freaks out and Oracle can't write to that control file, it might still be easy to recover. Amongst a host of other Perfect Storm confluences beyond my control, there was no recent backup. Damn, I'm glad I dup'd the control file. Up and running and all's well. Also worth mentioning that this is Oracle 8.1.7.4.0 on WinTuke (not my choice).
