They do it in spurts.

You arrived just when they are adding accounts, so they gave you more to
hand out.

Now that the IPO went through, perhaps they are getting ready to go into
production mode.

Hmm.  Daniel sent me an invite yesterday.  I signed up.  Tested the
account, and then noticed the link to invite other folks.  So then I
invited other folks who were able to immediately signup.  Dunno.

You get invites after a month or two of using the account.

They are adding people gradually.

You are correct.  You actually have to use the account then a bolded
colored
link will show up on the bottom left of your web page.

And the *main* thing is that you get a 1Gb mailbox.

I have a gmail account too - I've had it about a week now. I don't seem
to have any way of inviting people.. Do you have to use the mailbox to
get that going? I have to admit - I haven't sent or received any mail
from/to the mailbox..

Also because other web-based mail accounts don't seem to create happy
users, they are looking for alternatives.
