I stand corrected. The listener is not that far backward compatible. After being questioned I tried it (on Windows) with the 10.2 listener and an 8.1.7 database and I get a TNS-12518 error. I know the 10.2 listener works with 10.2, 10.1 and 9i databases and the 9i listener can be used with 9i and 8i databases. I don't have an 8.0 database around anymore but I suspect that the 8.1.7 listener can handle the 8.0.6 database. To sum it up, it looks like you need (at least) two listeners an 8.1.7 one and a 10.2 one.

You can use the 10.2 listener to service all databases. Listeners are backward compatible. You only need to run 1 listener of the same version as your "highest" Oracle version database. At 08:23 AM 11/29/2006, Sanjay Mishra wrote:I have three Oracle software in one server 8.06, 817 and 10.2.0.2 and each one is having one instance running on the server. Do I need to run three listener for all three Database separately on 3 different Port or there is any way that I can use one Listener to take care of all Client request.
