Manipulate DATE histograms

Hi listers,
I am  looking for an example how to manipulate a histogram 
On a DATE column with DBMS_STATS.
I  have only found examples using VARCHAR and NUMBER types.
Any pointers, links, articles, etc ?

Export/import  of the table + manipulating histogram is not an option,
Since the table is 20 GB and I have no (service) downtime window.
