I only set it in RAC environments an then it goes in the spfile.
I prefer to set the parameter to the full connect descriptor instead
of setting it to a name that is resolved via a name service (i.e.
tnsnames). That's a personal preference as I don't see any advantage
to making it a lookup.

Preferences? Why? It seems to add just one more detail to
starting, recovery, so forth.
