I think you need to have a good foundation in the concepts of database
replication before attempting to work with any replication solution. 
I would strongly recommend that before any replication solution is
implemented, the DBA should sit down with the business leaders and
require them to determine what is required (reporting, failover,
backups, etc.) BEFORE any specific technology is discussed.  From that
point, you can make a decision on product and technology that will
meet the needs of your business.

I don't think a person should be so focused on replication that they
don't work on databases, as many replication decisions need to be
addressed in the database.  I also think in many companies, there is
not enough replication to require a dedicated resource and they would
be better off having 2 people working on replication AND other
database tasks.  This provides human "fail-over" to allow people time
off for a personal life which might put the company at risk if THE
replication dba is scuba diving for a week in Mexico and a failover
needs to happen or replication problems start happening.
