We did use Shareplex to reduce the downtime window, when we migrated one of
our critical large databases from 806 to 9i. We took an export backup of
the 806 database, started shareplex to queue up transactions on the 806
instance, imported the 806 data into the 9i instance, and then applied the
queued up transactions to 9i. Once everything was in sync, pointed
production to 9i, and then shareplex was re-configured to apply
transactions from the 9i instance, back to the 806 instance. This was, in
case, we ran into application level issues, like after 3 days, and had to
rollback. The rollback would be immediate without any loss of data.
We had no long columns in the database, had a shareplex support person
on-site. Since this was across versions, Dataguard or Standby was not a
solution. This tool did reduce our downtime windows tremendously.

I agree with Mark. We have been using Shareplex for the past three years
and
we have had great experience. We have master-master replication between two
sites which are 2000 miles apart and have never experienced any major
issues.

I wasn't reporting my view, I was reporting my experience. Your
experience was different. Sorry. Yes, I know that Data Guard can now
handle the things that drove me to Shareplex in the first place. I
think that Shareplex remains a viable option at a lot of sites because
there are still many 8i sites out there. For those sites, I can
heartily recommend Shareplex. Now, THAT was my view.

That's an interesting view Mark. We have just completed a large =3D
migration using Shareplex 4.0 (that was the version we started on, I =3D
know 4.5 is out now)
and the major issue we had (apart from the fact we were migrating from =
=3D
Tru64 to Solaris) was that Shareplex did not handle longs very well.
I know that 4.5 it is slightly better but we had an extended migratiopn
=3D
whereby we created empty tables on the new database and then had an =3D
outage to export the source database and activated Shareplex capture for
=3D
all tables at that point.
We imported that data to the target database and then started the post =
=3D
queue to apply changes. We then ran a lot of compare tables routines =3D
because this was a mission critical system(s) and we could not afford =
=3D
any other long outages.
Shareplex compares each column but with long columns it can only check =
=3D
the first 64 characters. After that it shows that row as being out of =
=3D
sync
We had a number of other issues with Shareplex, some concerned with =3D
longs, others to do with the fact that we were on Tru64 on one side.
We also learned that the capture process and post queue are not =3D
resilient to disk crashes under some circumstances (I suppose that can =
=3D
be said of most applications to be honest)
Overall Shareplex allowed us to do something that Oracle did not support
=3D
and we completed the project successfully using Shareplex. I would be =
=3D
happy to use it again, but with DataGuard now available at no additional
=3D
cost, that would be my first choice

I implemented Shareplex at a previous contract assignment for a simple
reporting database. It was easy to implement and easy to maintain. The
driving reason for using Shareplex was that the data model involved had
LONG columns. A major advantage with Shareplex is that the queueing of
transactions occurs outside the database so there is less risk of space
issues if replication falls behind (the only times that Shareplex fell
behind for me was due to my own error). =3D3D20
