We use it for everything here (Windows, Unix, Oracle, SQL Server,
Informix, Network, etc.) and it's okay in that it's a centralized tool
for checking everything, but it's not as flexible as I'd like when it
comes to who gets notified for alerts and how. I prefer to rely on my
custom scripts to alert me by email & cell phone text message and then I
can easily customize it however I want depending on who should get the
page (who is on-call that day?), what information the message should
contain, etc. OVOW just seems a little too rigid and cumbersome to me,
but it's possible that I'm just not fully aware of all the
possibilities. We've had it for a while, but we already had custom
monitoring in place for all our databases long before the implementation
of OVOW so we DBAs have been slow to fully adopt it - it's one of those
things that always seems to be "on the back burner".
Another annoyance is that it can be very slow, particularly when you use
the fat client (vs. the web console) and you try to bring up a lot of
acknowledged messages.
Oh, and one more thing - some of the queries it runs to check on your
databases, e.g. the queries on dba_free_space, dba_extents, etc. can
cause a pretty significant load on your database, depending on your DB
version, LMT vs. DMT, number of objects in your database etc. So,
you'll want to monitor after implementing the DBSPI for Oracle and make
sure it's not bogging things down too much. I disabled some of the
metrics and set others to run less frequently because of this.
I think it's preferable to use the built-in monitoring of 10g if
possible.
Regards,
Brandon

Subject: HP Open view
Hi All,
I have just started a new job and have to set up monitoring for the
oracle/Sybase and sql server environment. Just the usual stuff (listener
up/down, database up/down, alert log monitoring, availability of
resources etc.). But they have HP open view and like everything to be
monitored using this tool.
Let's focus on oracle for now, as this will be my first task, does
anyone have experience with HP Open view and alerts/monitoring of oracle
database environments?
Any horror stories, gotcha's etc etc?
Regards
Jack
