Slightly old topic.We are frequently getting this error 'ORA-245 (control file backup operation failed)' after we upgraded our database to 11.2.0.2. Would be helpful if you can share if the solution mentioned in the below email worked for you.

Sent: 21/7/'11, 21:55 Thanks, Adric. I figured that was the easiest. I was afraid it was not supported even if it appears to work. I opened an SR and finally the analyst suggested the same. We put it in ASM today and will see if we still get intermittent ORA-245 (control file backup operation failed). How long ago did you put your snapshot controlfile in ASM? You never had the error ever since? Yong Huang
We're using ASM here, for the simple reason that it's the only form of shared storage available in the relevant cluster. It's pretty easy to configure. RMAN> configure snapshot controlfile name to '+DISKGROUP/dbname/controlfile/snapcf_dbname.f';
..
According to Note 1268725.1 and Bug 10263733, on 11.2.0.2 RAC, the snapshot controlfile used during RMAN backup must be placed on shared storage.
