After taking the weekend to *not* think about this issue, I'm not sure I
follow you.  Are you implying that the function in the WHERE clause acts
like a subquery?

Also, since my query should return at most a single row (provided the data
in the tables is correct) and I'm using 10.1.0.5.0, I wouldn't think that
any deterministic caching would be taking place.
