that and all was well in the harmonious family of relational databases.

"new feature" really raises my eyebrows.
I think IMU is different from discrete transactions. AFAIK DTs pinned the
datablock until transaction ended, IMU doesn't. With IMU, normal read
consistency mechanisms work ok.
