Apologies to those of you getting this more than once, but we are trying to=
=0D
make as many people who are interested in Oracle internals aware of our=0D
meeting as possible. The better our attendance, the better chance we have=
=0D
of Oracle continuing to provide this caliber of people to speak at our=0D
meetings.=0D
=0D
The OAUG Database SIG (http://dbsig.oaug.org) is meeting on Sep 12 at 9AM=
=0D
as part of Connection Point 2004 (see http://www.oaug.org for details). You=
=0D
do not need to register for the conference to attend SIG meetings. =0D

Title: Oracle10g SQL Optimization=0D
=0D
Presenters: Mohamed Zait, Benoit Dageville=0D
=0D
Abstract: =0D
=0D
Oracle Database 10g features a sophisticated cost based optimizer (CBO) for=
=0D
efficient execution of even the most complex SQL statements. Since it was=
=0D
first introduced in Oracle7, the CBO has been substantially enhanced to=0D
support a comprehensive set of access paths, adaptive search technology,=0D
and, the most importantly, new database features introduced since Oracle7.=
=0D
A good testimonial of how mature this technology has become is the fact=0D
that the CBO is only supported optimizer mode in Oracle10g. This paper=0D
discusses the enhancements made to the CBO in Oracle10g and elaborates how=
=0D
its built-in knowledge and intelligence can be leveraged in Oracle10g to=0D
automatically tune problem SQL statements. In addition, the paper will also=
=0D
highlight some best practices that can make SQL Tuning task a lot more=0D
efficient and less time consuming. Finally, a step-by-step approach will be=
=0D
outlined for migrating an application from the RBO to the CBO.=0D

Presenter Bio:=0D
=0D
Mohamed Zait is the manager of the SQL optimizer development group at=0D
Oracle. He has been with Oracle for more than 8 years working in different=
=0D
areas such as SQL Execution Memory Management, Parallel Query Processing,=
=0D
and SQL Execution. Mohamed is also one of the leading architects of the=0D
Oracle10g=92s Automatic SQL Tuning feature. =0D
=0D
Benoit Dageville is a consulting member in the Oracle Database Server=0D
Technologies division at Oracle Corporation in Redwood Shores, California.=
=0D
His main areas of expertise include parallel query processing, ETL (Extract=
=0D
Transform and Load), large Data Warehouse benchmarks (e.g. TPC-H), SQL=0D
execution and optimization. Since 1999, he is one of the lead architects of=
=0D
the self-managing database initiative at Oracle.=0D
