Execute runInstaller only through the checks - is it safe with everything online?

We are in the process of upgrading all our Grid and databases to 12c on our
linux hosts.  During the most recent upgrade, we had a failure in the step
that runs the checks.  Stopped everything corrected the problem and clicked
"check again" and continued on.

Questions:
Is it safe to start runInstaller and go through the checks, but not proceed
past that point, outside of a maintenance window where applications and the
databases are still online?  The idea is to get to the point where we
identify all possible issues prior to the upgrade window, thereby reducing
the time needed for the window and possible problem resolution

We do run healthcheck scripts and runclvfy.sh at least a few days prior to
the upgrade.  Are these sufficient and we just missed the "oracleasm does
not match..." issue when reviewing the run?
