I thought that LIBPATH and LD_LIBRARY_PATH were platform-specific and mutually exclusive. By it's value, it seems obvious that LIBPATH isn't needed to install the Oracle client. Try unsetting it and installing. Are you using Sun's default compiler/linker, gcc, or other? Examine the documentation for it's prereqs to see if yours qualifies.
