We used I3 for about 4 years.

It was one of the few monitoring apps we could find back "then"
that showed application performance based on the WI. Essentially it's a
SGA attacher, so as usual with those, each time you make even a single
point patch to a DB, you have to wait until Precise devs release an
updated executable that can has the new SGA layouts. The great thing I
liked was that it was R/O graphical web based interface, which meant we
could hand out logins to all the developers and let them get on with it.
We dumped it when OEM started showing us the same info as I3 at a much,
much cheaper price per server. I think it was only supported on RHEL,
SPARC64 and Windows at the time we used it.

You really don't need a consultant to set it up, it's actually
pretty noddy if you follow the instructions. After the initial set up, I
set up a few I3 collection servers on Solaris and Linux myself, as usual
they just want to rip the wotnot by charging fees for a consultant to
come in.

Spotlight was nice when it came out but hasn't grown out of the old
statistics and ratio based performance monitoring that has long been
supplanted by the wait interface analysis. Waits and CPU usage are
much more exact powerful method of performance analysis. DB Optimizer
is totally based on the wait interface which makes identification and
analysis of issues easy.

Do you mean I3 by Precise when you say E3?
I3 seems pretty good from the demos I've seen and clients I've know
that use it. The issue I hear is that its extremely difficult to set
up. When I talked to Precise about trying it out they said that an
Precise consultant was required to come set it up. That's too much for
me.
