I beg to differ. A good SAN will do everything that high redundancy will do:
create and synchronize additional copies of data. Good replication like EMC or
Hitachi will even support geographically remote copy of the database, which
would be a problem with ASM high redundancy. Basically, all those high
redundancy features provide the same protection as a decent SAN. My impression
is that those features are meant for the people with their databases on JBOD.
As incredible as it may seem, such databases do exist. And if hardware is not
providing the necessary redundancy, there is no other option but to use ASM
redundancy and duplexed redo logs.
