Database link 11g to 8i

Does anyone know of a way to get a database link from 11g to 8i to work?
Connections to 8i are no longer allowed from 11g and unfortunately we
have one database that we just can't get them to upgrade.

 

The only solution that sounds feasible is to have an intermediate
database at 10g and link 11g->10g, 10g->8i.
