Thank you for the reference.

That doc effectively only shows 'heterogeneous'  capabilities across
different flavours of the same OS. Only Windows/Linux 32 bit is
supported from 11g onwards.
That capability was introduced (acc. to Larry Carpenter at an 11g New
Features presentation in Copenhagen by the end of Febr). on request of a
large customer that got struck by a bug in Windows, rendering their
primary unavailable. Their standby suffered from the same bug, hence
they wanted to be able to run on two different technology stacks. It was
probably a very lasrge customer, since Oracle honoured the request with
this cross Windows/Linux capability.

April Wells included OS info in her message, but no version info
(neither whether Solaris was oin X86 or Sparc, nor Oracle version info).
I definitely could have been more precise about cross-platform support,
I was generalising, but Solaris/Linux is/was not supported.
