Hi J. Dex,

for what it's worth, I wrote this years ago :

http://www.jlcomp.demon.co.uk/faq/db_move.html

It covers using a cold backup to move a database from one server to
another but there is a parageraph on what to do when you are copying to
the same server.

Just be aware that if the 'from' database is up when you start the 'to'
database, you may get an error saying that the datafiles are in use.
Shut the 'from' before starting the 'to' then shut the 'to' and restart
the 'from' before restarting the 'to'. (what am I on about !) and you
will avoid the error.

Also, make sure you have changed the controlfile names in the init.ora,
the redo and datafile names in the controlfile trace to match where they
will be under the new database otherwise you screw up the 'from'
database big time. (Been there done that - had a backup to repir the
damage, always useful !0

It used to give an error under 734 and 8.0 - but I suspect the above
article needs updating a bit.

Norman.
