Are you on ASM? If so check that alert.log Is your log area full? Check to see if you can do a log switch. any alerts in the bdump or udump area? Any alerts in the crs logs? Are you using rman? try doing a crosscheck on the archivelogs and deleting any of the expired. If you are on linux and using ASM there is a bug that hangs ASM after 300+ days and you need to take down your dbs, reboot ASM and then bring backup you dbs. This is for a 10.2.0.1 ASM db.
