ASM is oracle's implementation of both a (database only) filesystem and a
volume manager.
Adding another volume manager results in another layer which would be added.

On itself that isn't all bad (using a LVM has become facto standard in some
cases, for example AIX), and it can be used to work around some ASM features
(like breaking given SAN slices into pieces the same size as the current
pieces so IO doesn't get unbalanced). But the reason for the LVM you've
given does not sound like a good idea. Indeed learning them to use asmcmd
seems like a good idea then.
