I'd like to add to what Jason says.
ASMLib is not required. In fact many people are happier with the
alternatives (like udev and device mapper).

ASMLib has been good to me but if you ever upgraded the kernel and forgot to
upgrade your ASMLib driver, you would know it when you went to bring up ASM.
With udev and other software that is part of Linux, you no longer need to do
that.
