Re: 10gR2, problem about Resource role

ROLEs came in Oracle7 (not Oracle6, I think). Prior versions had
"CONNECT", "RESOURCE" and "DBA" as the 3 System Privileges.
ie  "CONNECT" was a privilege.

Once ROLEs were implemented, _with_ specific System Privileges,
 "CONNECT", "RESOURCE" and "DBA" were created as ROLEs,
for "backward compatibility" {eg application scripts that ran
"GRANT CONNECT TO .." instead of
"CREATE USER .. GRANT CREATE SESSION"}

For us mortals - why would one need, let's say, CREATE SEQUENCE to
connect to database? Was it impossible in Oracle 5 or earlier to
connect without creating a sequence?
I assume CONNECT role was just given wrong name not reflecting its purpose.
