Also, have you ever wonder why CONNECT role contains more that just
CREATE SESSION privilege?

  I believe this has been finally rectified in 10.2
   
  SQL> select privilege from dba_sys_privs where grantee='CONNECT';
  PRIVILEGE
----------------------------------------
CREATE SESSION
