[optacon-l] Re: Some thoughts about the optacon

I used it to read case documentation when I was a rehab teacher 1978-85. I
used to amaze our somewhat technologically ambivalent Agency Director who
was blind, by reading him materials he randomly pulled from his briefcase.

When I was working as a rehab counselor, I used it to readportions of files.
I put Braille labels on my case folders, and did a lot of my own filing when
a sighted person wasn't available. I put the Optacon in my desk drawer and
carefully extended the cable. This reduced some of the noise of the
machine.--Camille Petrecca, Connecticut

My mobility instructor mentioned that she hadn't seen an Optacon for 30
years when she saw mine at work. I use it to identify my reports from those
of others coming out on the network printer next to my desk, to familiarize
myself with the layouts of reports and spreadsheets I use so I can better
understand how to navigate their computerized counterparts. I have been
trying to read computer screens and displays of equipment at work.

I thiink just about all of us would agree with what you have said here, and
I too am much greatful for Mr. Oehm' repair capabilities, because I have had
2 repairs done on this Optacon by him, both excellent, of course...

I use mine for reading mail (unfortunately including bills), printed
letters, printed labels by buttons on many appliances, cans of food, frozen
dinners and other packaged food, directions on those, and when my kids were
little, I read the baby food jars and knew what I was going to feed them at
any given meal. This does not include all I use it for, but this covers
many of the uses of the Optacon...Oh I forgot, identifying legal tender
bills!
