[optacon-l] Re: Optacon for Music

You can't do anything but gain from the attempt, and it might turn out to be
very helpful. I'm glad you mentioned Hadley having music. I need to bone up,
could check that out.

>Hi Carolyn!

I have never tried to play any print music I was reading. I was working to
hard to learn to read it, just barely proficient.

I studied the braille music notation course from the Hadley School for the
Blind in the mid 70's. I also had a semester of piano in college around
the same time, maybe a little later. My teacher was blind, so he had
braille music for me. It was written bar over bar, so I'd read the
right-hand part with my left hand while I played with my right hand, and
did the reverse for the left-hand part, so I could read with my right hand
and play with my left. Then, when I had both parts memorized, I'd put them
together.

Reading music with an optacon would be more challenging, because of the way
the notes are laid out on the page. I agree that braille music is
easier. But I enjoy a challenge, so I will see what I can do with my
keyboard and print music sometime.
