[opendtv] Re: being professional (was: Hollywood may demand DRM for larger harddrives)

All I can say in response is the only antidote for bad or non-existant
ideas -- broadcasters sitting around "conspiring" to subvert a non-existant
right of non-existant people would seem to hit that metric in spades -- is
more speech.

I have a very difficult time tolerating idiotic, non-thinking responses and
parries. I will challenge them in every instance, no matter where, when or
why. (Well, maybe not when a police officer has a gun pointed my way.)
Tone is commensurate with the tone of the other.

Another pet peeve is one-note johnnies. I have encountered such types on
this list and on other lists. Their only contribution is to advance their
commercial interests and to denigrate any ideas they view to be contrary to
their commercial interests.

They all tend to confuse acquiescence with acceptance, and take acquiescence
as approval. To begin to get the message through to them, you have to
clearly indicate the opposite of approval, acceptance or acquiescence. If
left unchecked, their non-ideas will crowd out all other communications.

Unfortunately, the antidote tends -- for a while -- to clog up the
transmission channel. Letting them know that rudeness on my part is the top
line tends to rein them in. Since I have no boss, they can't appeal, except
through me personally. Between a rock and hard place, they sometimes get
the message.

Your criticisms are well-put, Jeroen.

The other part of the story, however, is the large number of industry folks
that are either lurkers on this list because they find the threads driven by
these non-participants to be pure drivel. Combine that with the bounces
from the list that happens from time to time, and more than a few decide
that re-subscribing is not worth it.  I can even offer names up on this;
former list members who got tired of deleting all the messages from certain
persons (yet never missing a thing that matters) to get to the wheat.

I tend to not put my random or idle thoughts on this list. In recent weeks
and months, it's been my stated position that several others hereabouts need
to follow the same guidelines. With limited success.

I am told by a few people that at least there is entertainment value in some
of my posts. I don't confuse acquiescence with acceptance, and I recognize
that people slow down their cars to watch wrecks, as well.
