Among other things, this was the politically correct thing for 
Sinclair to say, given the fact that they were broadly viewed as an 
outcast, trying to bring the DTV transition to a halt.

And Nat was being honest...the new receivers do work better, perhaps 
good enough to allow ATSC to reach most of the homes covered by NTSC.

But why is NTSC the benchmark? The service is marginal at best, and 
high quality reception can be problematic for many of the same 
reasons that cause problems for ATSC. One would think with the 
opportunity work with a clean slate, that we could come up with 
something that would be useful for all Americans.

What you did not mention is that Sinclair ALSO started promoting ATSC 
after Ostroff went public with support. They created public service 
promotional announcements for DTV and started running them on their 
stations, and offered these spots to ALL broadcasters. But the 
broadcast community simply ignored this and continues to ignore their 
DTV channels.
