John:

I have a Samsung T165, so I don't know if it works he same as the older
Samsung STBs, But I'll find out when I return next week. Also, you missed a
key point in my email. That is why would John Q. or Mary Q. Viewer spend
money for a STB they do not think they need unless they are told the digital
programming is on a different channel. If for example they new that analog
channel 20 programming can be seen on digital channel 38, I believe the
non-technical viewer would try to see if they can receive something on
channel 38. If they could not, they might stop by Best Buy, Circuit City,
etc. and ask the question of why they can't see programming on Channel 38,
and the friendly salesperson could show them a digital STB and make a sale.
However if they don't know or try to view 38, they never have the
opportunity to ask. That is marketing. And, also remember that legacy TVs
and VCR tuners allow selecting all VHF and UHF legacy channels. However if
I select a digital channel 38 I see nothing but snow. That is why the
viewer needs to know what digital channel you are transmitting on.

Cheers,

Ralph

Ralph,

We are a digital broadcaster, and with the several examples of consumer STBs
we have, to a unit each one requires a complete channel scan as the ONLY
way to enter a digital station. Some of the early ones will even wipe out
any previously discovered stations if they happen to be off air at the time.

Not very conducive to those who have to use an antenna rotor to tune in
different stations. However, an early generation flaw in the unit's
software, I grant.

Telling our digital viewers we are on UHF channel 55 is meaningless to them
since all the consumer will ever see is 23-1 and 23-2 as a channel number.
They will never see the number 55 anywhere, they cannot enter the number 55
(at least on the Samsung, Zenith, and Sony examples we have here) so why
advertise "Digital 55"?

Cheers,

John Shutt
