By means of a USB plug-in device, added to USDTV STBs, which transcodes
the incoming AVC into MPEG-2 H.262 compression, which is then processed
by the existing STB MPEG decoder.
Interesting approach. Not a software upgrade to the old STB, as I had
expected. This approach resolves the processing power shortcomings of
older MPEG decoders by adding an outboard co-processor, essentially,
rather than hope the old processor had enough umph to handle AVC.
The MPEG decoder will suddenly be presented with about twice as many
subchannels as it thought were possible.
