Bert The purpose of the retune day is to clear UK DTT Mux B which will then be used for the rollout of HD on UK terrestrial TV The modulation standard for the new HD service will be DVB-T2, although iirc the final choice on the mode has not been made. The plan is to have around 50% coverage in time for the world cup next summer. All this is going on at the same time as the conversion from analogue terrestrial to digital. Fyi - the UK currently has 4 or 5 analogue services + 6 low power T1 SD DTT services all running in parallel. As part of the Digital switch over (DSO) that we are going through, these 11 services are switched over to 6 high power DTT services, with >98.5% coverage for the 3 public service multiplexes and >90% coverage for the 3 commercial multiplexes. These SD high power DTT services are all T1. The change half way through this process is to clear Mux B [also known as PSB3 or BBCB] and then use this for HD. In some areas, the initial rollout of the DTT HD service will occur before he switch to high power DTT, so in those areas [eg London] there will be 5 high power analogue, 6 low power DTT + the HD service. In these areas, the 12 services will be merged into the final 6 high power DTT. 5 of which will be DVB-T1 SD, and the 6th DVB-T2 HD BR Prin --- On Wed, 30/9/09, Manfredi, Albert E <albert.e.manfredi@xxxxxxxxxx> wrote: From: Manfredi, Albert E <albert.e.manfredi@xxxxxxxxxx> Subject: [opendtv] UK: Millions Retune Boxes for HD To: "opendtv@xxxxxxxxxxxxx" <opendtv@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Date: Wednesday, 30 September, 2009, 5:19 PM I didn't get this HD impact from the DTG web site's analogous "retune" announcement. So, HD will be transmitted over DVB-T in the UK now. I wonder what the practical effect of this will be on the likelihood of DVB-T2 ever being fielded? Bert --------------------------- http://www.tvtechnology.com/article/87948 UK: Millions Retune Boxes for HD 09.30.2009. Viewers in an estimated 18 million homes across the U.K. are retuning their Freeview set-top boxes this week in order to upgrade to receive HD programming. Among other things, the change-over will mean more Brits will get access to ch. 5 (known as "Five") - while other dwellings may no longer be able to receive ITV3 and ITV4, according to Reuters. And some Freeview STBs may no longer work at all. But to hear a Freeview executive tell it, "These significant and necessary changes will immediately bring Freeview viewers new channels, introduce new homes to existing channels and prepare the platform for the future availability of Freeview HD." The technical upgrade to HD was scheduled to take place today (Sept. 30), as Freeview officials were asking viewers to retune their boxes starting at around lunchtime (apparently no specific changeover time was announced). The changes, Freeview said, should mean that more than a half-million homes will be able to receive Five for the first time. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- You can UNSUBSCRIBE from the OpenDTV list in two ways: - Using the UNSUBSCRIBE command in your user configuration settings at FreeLists.org - By sending a message to: opendtv-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx with the word unsubscribe in the subject line.
