The collusion is the same Bert.
No it isn't, Craig. When Skipper was discussing the possibility of ESPN going
direct to consumer, over the Internet, that's proof that collusion isn't
necessary.
But ESPN is NOT going Direct to consumer. And Skipper's boss made it very clear
that this is not going to happen any time soon.
When Skipper agreed years ago to send ESPN over Sling, with **much less**
content from non-Disney congloms in the bundle, that's more proof. When
Moonves set up All Access, that's still more proof.
No Bert. It is proof that the congloms are moving their PAID bundles to the
Internet. The fact that the congloms are playing with skinny bundles tells us
that they are doing market research. To date these bundles have been purposely
neutered in an effort to see if they can keep some cable cutters in the fold.
With the new Hulu service it will be possible to cut the cord and subscribe to
a viable alternative VMVPD service that cuts out the facilities based MVPDs,
and leaves them the crumbs of ISP service...
There's no way you can make the case that collusion remains the same, when
the competition ushered in by the neutral Internet got involved.
Correct. It has gotten MUCH WORSE.
Furthermore, the simple fact that this Internet competition exists, has
caused even the legacy MVPDs to rethink their bundling and pricing practices,
with talk of slimmer bindles.
Slimmer bundles are inevitable Bert, as I have been trying to teach you for
years...
The problem has always been BLOATED bundles; the congloms added new networks
for more than a decade, as this bypassed the rules in the 1992 Cable Act
intended to control the rapid rate increases for MVPD service. So the MVPD
bundles have been expanded with "rerun channels," filled with the library
content owned by the congloms.
Then the congloms started selling this library content to Netflix, Hulu, Amazon
et al.
Guess what? Consumers flocked to these services for two reasons:
1. They could watch what they want on demand;
2. They could avoid commercials.
This has fundamentally changed to TV landscape
New MVPD networks are rare today. Rerun channels are unnecessary bloat.
The focus moving forward will be to consolidate all of the MVPD networks that
offer original content into slim bundles that can be sold at lower prices.
So it is simply not true that collusion remains rampant, with competition.
In your own words the collusion has increased Bert. You continuously criticize
the collusion between the content owners and the connected TV device
manufacturers. What we are seeing is MORE dealing, more attempts to tie content
to specific devices or services, and the need to subscribe to more services to
access all the content you may want.
What is true is that those wedded to the old way, like you, are being made to
pay more and more. Which is only natural, when demand remains inelastic.
Actually, I just cut a deal to pay less, as is now routine for most MVPD
subscribers. And the terms are growing less onerous. No two year contract, and
free access to two premium networks that cost more than $30/mo. The MVPDs are
responding to competition.

Craig
