The cable companies are encoding in 256 QAM to lower the bit
rate and pack more programs
into the same 6 mHz space so they can make more money. Period.
Not quite. 256QAM itself does not require the bitrate be reduced. A 6MHz
256QAM channel carries 38mbit/sec, almost twice that of an ATSC channel.
The cable co desire to carry more than 'almost 2' HD programs in the
channel is what drives them to transcode, not the modulation.
