[opendtv] Re: Transition confusion

We use a variable bitrate on our ATSC transmissions as the HD programming is part of a 1 HD-3 SD multiplex with Stat Muxing.

What does the cable company typically do with that? Will a Cherry picker groom the data to a constant bitrate? Do the cable companies perform their own stat muxing?

Cable tends to use 15mbit/sec for HD streams. It is fairly common
practice for them to transcode the OTA signals down to 15mbit/sec (or
possibly less). There is certainly a visible difference when comparing
the same HD signal received by my TV's ATSC receiver vs the cable box
delivering its version via HDMI.
