And they quickly replaced LPs on store shelves, at least on this side of
the pond. So I wouldn't be too surprised if CDs end up lasting as long
as LPs have. (I know some LPs are still being pressed for afficionados,
but that doesn't really count.)
On the CD size question, when they were introduced, I read that the 12
cm diameter was to allow them to fit in the car radio DIN slot. Are you
saying this is folklore?
On the patent question, I think Gillette does the same with its razors.
As soon as the patent runs out, out pops a new Gillette razor standard.
Fortuntately, the new ones seem to be better than the ones they replace.
