Most sports bars use DBS as this is a very easy way to fill many screens with different sporting events. In addition, this simplifies the payment of rights fees for the content.
Who do you send the check to for the rights fees if you pull the signals off the air? Just because they are 'free' you cannot display off-air signals to bar patrons without paying additional rights fees.
