We must love standards, the way new ones get created at the drop of a hat.
Not sure why USB 3.0 wouldn't be applicable here. It would provide for power as
well as any control and audio/video signals (either compressed or
uncompressed), small plugs usable with cell phones, etc. Maybe they're after
new IP.

Standards group formed for HD links between phones and TVs

The role of the handset could expand over time as it becomes the key device to
control and integrate home media and control systems, remotely or in the house.
Companies like Apple and Cisco are already working on ecosystems that bring
together mobile, TV and internet devices and activities, and now an industry
group has been formed to create standards.
The Mobile High Definition Interface Working Group has been formed by Nokia,
Samsung, Sony, Toshiba and Silicon Image and aims to create an industry
standard for an audio/video interface, to connect cellphones or handheld
consumer electronics devices directly to HD televisions and displays.
The mobile connectivity standard would be based on Silicon Image's Mobile High
Definition Link (MHDL) technology, and will be defined, promoted and marketed
by the working group. It says a single cable with a low pin count interface
will be able to support up to 1080p HD digital video and audio in addition to
delivering power to a portable device.
The working group is expected to sign up new members and, once the consortium
of supporters is in place, to start work on developing specifications, from
this autumn. These specs will initially focus on transmission and reception of
HD content between portable devices and display devices.
