I've had a few specific recption problems that I think this site
http://www.fcc.gov/mb/video/tvq.html
explains fairly well.
WETA-DT (PBS in DC) seems impossible to receive. According to the FCC,
it is transmitting from a 177 meter tower at 75 KW. Maybe more
importantly, the DT channel is 27, the analog channel is 26, and the
analog ERP 2.3 MW. It's a good bet that if analog were reduced in power
or turned off, the digital would work (~13 miles range).
Instead, the 32 mile distant WMPT (PBS in Annapolis), on a 289 meter
tower, at 150 KW ERP, comes in solid. It's not adjacent to any full
power analog stations, even though it is on the same channel as a low
power station about 10 miles behind where the antenna is aimed. And
adjacent to a 90 KW digital station, also in the opposite direction.
Also, WDCA-DT (UPN 20) refuses to show up. No wonder. It's on a 146
meter tower, at a whopping 1.17 KW ERP, sandwiched between two full
power local digital stations. This is the station that others have
claimed can only be received from no more than 2 miles away.
I entered a 90 Km radius at that web site, and it looks like just about
every UHF channel up to Ch 69 is in use. Very few exceptions. Amazing.
