I sympathize with your conjecture here, although it seems counterproductive to some of the players. Which is why I'm not of that school of thought. The CE companies in particular would seem to be cutting off their noses to spite their faces. Because (it seems) that by selling OTA/cable equipment, they would not lose the cable market at all. People still go for their umbillical providers, even if they *also* use OTA. That's what those percentages seem to indicate, isn't it? Of course the cable and DBS companies themselves would prefer the CE companies not provide standard boxes, and not provide any sort of OTA capability. But why should CE companies listen? Let's even say that companies X and Y have exclusive deals with cable systems, so those two companies don't want any generic cable/OTA boxes on the market. What about all the other CE companies? Why should they willingly drop out? Let's say that "most" US consumers are too dense to use regular recording devices -- they only want PVRs. What about the millions who aren't too dense? I don't get it. I must be dense.
