Granted. If they don't, then how about "something along the lines of
Doug's idea?"

These general concepts have been discussed on this list for a long time.
The idea is to make use of the attributes of 8-VSB, rather than letting
them work against you. And in this case, the fact that the symbols are
of very short duration, that they are scrambled so as to form on average
a very flat spectrum, and that when the receiver restores 8-VSB to
8-level AM-DSB, any Q axis energy is an error. This is info that's
already available in 8T-VSB, and could be put to good use by the DFE.
Along with the segment sync and frame sync sequences (which it seems the
LG 5th gen may already be using cleverly).
