If I had to bet, I'd bet that a distant NTSC or ATSC on the same frequency
as your local ATSC temporarily knocked out your service.
However, not knowing the Southern California markets, and not being inclined
to spend hours with the broadcast & cable annual, I couldn't say for sure
something like "you have local ATSC 21, and there is an analog 21 150 miles
away."

I can consider the ducting/anti-ducting issues with respect to ash, etc.
But, why would I have better than normal reception of analog and digital,
then all digital drops out, but analog reception improves temporarily? It
seems to me that the atmospheric effects would apply to NTSC and 8-VSB
modulation.
