Not if all TV appliances incorporate their own receiver, which is what
they are supposed to do. That makes the most sense, because now you can

Since every appliance had its own receiver, he could watch one show

True, IF every device has the requisite tuner(s).
The example given in the Panasonic press release was the ability to
record one show while watching another on a second TV, WITHOUT a
cable box. If that TV does not have a digital cable tuner, you would
need two digital tuners in the DVD recorder.
The reason I keep bringing this up is that virtually all DVRs have
dual tuners - typically for watching one while recording another, but
also for recording two shows that have overlapping "broadcast" times.
